 A few years ago, over three or four months as we fed and took care of our horses every morning and every evening, a little woodpecker would join us.  This woodpecker had only one leg, but was very brave.  All of the other woodpeckers (and birds) would fly away as soon as we arrived, but this little woodpecker would actually get closer to us rather than further away.  Day after day "Sage" (we called her) would be there to greet us and share in the horses grain.  During this time, it felt as though Sage wanted to tell us something, and each day we would come away with more of what we felt was her life story.  When the story was finished, we wanted to share it, because it is a story of friendship, trust, kindness, acceptance, overcoming obstacles, diversity, strength, and building self confidence through experience.  So, we turned it into a children's book and called it: 

"Sage, The One-Legged Woodpecker"
